Arsenal response pleases Wenger

Arsene Wenger was delighted that Arsenal put the disappointment of defeat by Hull behind them as they beat Porto 4-0 in the Champions League.

The Gunners boss said: "It is the response I wanted. Maybe it was our most complete performance this season.

"We could have scored a few more but most important was to win and respond in a convincing way.

"I didn't make many changes because sometimes you have to give a team a chance to respond quickly."

Wenger had promised sweeping changes after the 2-1 defeat by Hull on Saturday but in the end made only one, bringing in Samir Nasri for Emmanuel Eboue.

Wenger explained: "I didn't make many changes because I didn't want to give a feeling that you punish one player more than another.

"We were sometimes a bit tense, especially at the start, but this time we were focused. At this level in the Premier League or Champions League that is vital.

"That's what we expected. But the first half of the response was here and the second half is on Saturday (away against Sunderland)."

Wenger also praised the display of winger Theo Walcott, who showed he is starting to fulfil his potential with another lively performance.

"At 19 years of age you can't say he's close (to being the finished article)," said the Frenchman.

"I think there's a lot more to come but he has shown again tonight that he's making good progress."
