Panathinaikos v Anorthosis Famagusta

Share

With Athens resembling more a war-zone than a stage for what should be a fascinating Champions League clash, there might be a regrettably unique atmosphere at the OAKA Spiros Louis Stadium on Tuesday evening.

The city in a state of shock and anger following the death of 15 year-old Alexandros Grigoropoulos, who was shot dead by police following an altercation with a group of youths on Saturday.

Athens has now suffered from three days of rioting, with police clashing with protesters who have damaged shops, buildings and filled the streets with violence.

Police have reacted with stun grenades in some situations, with Molotov cocktails also having been used by some rioters – there have been violent scenes also in other pars of the country, including Thessaloniki and Trikala.

The situation is perhaps reminiscent of rioting that lasted for weeks following the killing of a teenager by police in 1985 and with such a history in mind, there have been suggestions from within the Greek media that the Panathinaikos-Anorthosis match might be canceled.

It wouldn’t be the first time European football’s governing body have taken such an action: AEK Athens' Champions League qualifying tie with Sevilla was postponed in the wake of the bush fires that plagued Greece last year.
