Škrtel news not so bad for Liverpool

Liverpool FC were relieved to learn that centre-back Martin Škrtel does not need surgery for a serious-looking knee injury, although the Slovakian international is expected to miss the rest of the UEFA Champions League group stage.

Right knee
Liverpool said today that Škrtel should return before Christmas from the right knee injury he suffered in Sunday's 3-2 win at Manchester City FC. The 23-year-old former FC Zenit St. Petersburg player needed oxygen on the pitch at Man City and it was feared he had sustained a nasty knee ligament injury.

Christmas bonus
However, the prognosis is more positive than that, with Liverpool spokesman Ian Cotton saying: "Martin was examined by a specialist today, who confirmed the player does not require surgery and is expected to be back playing by Christmas." Liverpool manager Rafael Benítez, who has central defensive cover in Daniel Agger and Sami Hyppiä, said: "It's bad news, but we have other options. He has given me a selection headache this season but that is a good problem for me as a manager."

Mean streak
With Škrtel manning the barricades alongside Jamie Carragher, the Anfield club have conceded only four goals in seven games in the Premier League – where they lie second in the table – and another two in four UEFA Champions League outings including qualifiers. Their group-stage campaign will end at PSV Eindhoven on 9 December, with matches against Club Atlético de Madrid, home and away, and Olympique de Marseille, home, preceding that fixture.
